In a move to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's austerity drive, NITI Aayog has canceled all planned in-person workshops, conferences, and seminars. This directive, communicated internally on May 12, aims to mitigate the financial impact of the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Key divisions, including the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), have been instructed to transition all major events to online formats. On May 10, PM Modi called on citizens to adopt austerity measures, such as reducing fuel consumption, working from home, postponing foreign travel, and delaying gold purchases for a year to help conserve India's foreign exchange reserves. In a related move, the government has increased the gold import duty from 6% to 15%. Additionally, Modi has reduced the size of his convoy while advocating for the inclusion of electric vehicles in his convoy without incurring new costs.
