Amritpal Singh, the chief of Waris Punjab De and Member of Parliament for Khadoor Sahib, was taken into police custody by Punjab Police on Thursday following the end of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). His arrest is linked to the February 2023 Ajnala police station attack case, where he faces serious charges including attempt to murder and rioting. Following a recent order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Singh was transferred from Dibrugarh Central Jail to Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station for a two-day remand for interrogation. The court's decision was influenced by concerns over potential law and order issues if he were moved to Punjab. Singh is implicated in around 12 other FIRs related to violence and intimidation across Punjab, and he was recently named as a conspirator in the murder of social media influencer Gurpreet Singh, which occurred in October 2024. His legal proceedings will be conducted via video conferencing to ensure access to representation without physical transfer.
