NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has successfully identified methane in the atmosphere of TOI-199b, a temperate gas giant located about 335 light-years from Earth. This groundbreaking discovery marks TOI-199b as the first temperate gas giant confirmed to contain methane, supporting existing hypotheses about the atmospheric compositions of such planets. The research team employed a technique known as transmission spectroscopy to observe the planet as it transited in front of its host star, enabling them to detect the absorption of specific wavelengths of light by methane. The findings suggest that TOI-199b, with a temperature of around 79 degrees Celsius (175 degrees Fahrenheit), could also harbor other gases like carbon dioxide and ammonia. Dr. Renyu Hu, an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, emphasized that further observations could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the atmospheric composition of TOI-199b and similar exoplanets. This study not only sheds light on TOI-199b but also encourages future exploration of other temperate gas giants.
