On Saturday, Manav Suthar, a 23-year-old all-rounder from Rajasthan, received his maiden Test cap during the pre-match presentation for the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Senior spinner Kuldeep Yadav presented the cap, marking Suthar's entry into the Indian Test team. A traditional slow left-arm orthodox spinner and lower-order batsman, Suthar has been recognized as one of India's promising red-ball talents. His rise from Sri Ganganagar to international cricket has been marked by impressive performances in domestic cricket, particularly during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season where he took 39 wickets in six matches. With a first-class record of 129 wickets and 945 runs from 29 matches, Suthar has also excelled for India A, notably being the joint-highest wicket-taker in the unofficial Test series against Australia A. His debut comes as selectors look to assess the next generation of spin-bowling all-rounders, especially with Ravindra Jadeja rested for this match.
