On Friday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the 'Teddy Bridgewater Act,' which permits K-12 public middle and high school coaches to utilize up to $15,000 of their own funds to support student-athletes. This legislation was introduced following the suspension of former Miami Northwestern football coach Teddy Bridgewater, who provided impermissible benefits to his players, including food and transportation. The act requires written parental consent and reporting to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). Bridgewater's actions had included significant expenses, such as $700 weekly for Uber rides and $2,200 for pre-game meals. Alongside this act, DeSantis also approved House Bill 538, which aims to increase coaches' salaries and regulate student-athlete transfers, limiting in-season transfers unless under extraordinary circumstances. This bill also mandates that 'home school' student-athletes must play at a high school within their county when transferring for athletics. Both new laws are set to take effect on July 1, 2024.
