Mohammad Yasir, a 14-year-old boxer from Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, returned home to a hero's welcome after winning a gold medal at the Asian Under-15 Boxing Championship held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His journey has been marked by significant challenges, including the death of his father when he was just six years old and subsequent homelessness after their home was demolished during an anti-encroachment drive by the Jammu and Kashmir government. Yasir, who works as a part-time cook, credits boxing and his coach, Ishtiyaq Malik, for changing his life. Malik discovered Yasir's talent during a brawl while he was fetching water for local boxers. Over the past three years, Yasir has trained under the Khelo India program, which has kept him focused and away from drugs in a neighborhood plagued by addiction. His mother, Naseema, plays a crucial role in his life, ensuring that her children engage in sports instead of succumbing to negative influences. With aspirations of representing India at the Olympics, Yasir's story is one of resilience and determination.
