The Election Commission of India (EC) has come under fire for its management of electoral rolls during the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal. Following the elections, the EC released statistical reports but failed to disclose the status of nearly 3.4 million pending appeals, including 700,000 deletion requests. This lack of transparency raises concerns about the EC's neutrality and its commitment to ensuring that no genuine voter is disenfranchised. The recently concluded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process faced criticism for excluding millions of eligible voters due to inconsistent application of criteria and reliance on outdated databases. In response to these issues, a proposal has emerged for an AI-enabled oversight layer to be integrated with the EC's digital platform, ECINet. This AI system would continuously monitor electoral processes, detect anomalies, and provide real-time assessments of neutrality and consistency. By doing so, it aims to enhance transparency and accountability, ensuring that the electoral process is fair and accessible to all citizens. The proposed AI watchdog could be implemented within a few months and would serve to strengthen the integrity of the electoral management system, addressing the public's concerns about bias and administrative failures.
