During a recent visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Sweden, the two nations announced plans for Ukraine to purchase up to 20 latest model Gripen E fighter jets and receive 16 older models as a donation. The Swedish government confirmed that Ukraine will allocate €2.5 billion from an EU loan for the new aircraft, with deliveries expected to commence in 2030. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the significance of this decision for both Sweden and Ukraine's air defense capabilities. The donation of the older Gripen jets is scheduled for early 2027. This announcement is part of Sweden's ongoing military support, which has totaled over 128 billion kronor (around €11 billion) since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022. Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine's reliance on Western allies for air defense, mentioning ongoing requests for additional ammunition for Patriot missile systems from the US, stressing the urgency as winter approaches.
