Purnendu Tiwary, a former Indian Navy official, remains in custody in Qatar due to a separate conviction for financial irregularities linked to his previous employer, Dahra Engineering and Security Services, based in Oman. In 2023, Tiwary's death sentence was commuted by a Qatari court along with seven other former Navy personnel, who have since returned to India. Despite efforts from the Indian government to secure his release, Tiwary continues to face legal challenges. Official sources have clarified that the claims made by Tiwary's sister, Meetu Bhargava, regarding his innocence were incorrect, stating that he was sentenced by Qatar's Court of Cassation. The Indian embassy in Qatar is actively involved, maintaining communication with Tiwary's family and providing support, including meetings with Tiwary in jail. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Tiwary's current case is separate from the earlier espionage charges that led to the commutation of his sentence.
