The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) has approved the resumption of tissue culture multiplication for the Kufri Bahar potato variety, which is vital for India's potato seed production system. This decision, made during the annual Revolving Fund Seed Management Committee (RFSMC) meeting for 2026-27, is particularly significant for Uttar Pradesh, where Kufri Bahar is cultivated in over 70% of the region's potato fields. CPRI director Dr. Brajesh Singh emphasized that the move responds to farmers' increasing demand for high-quality planting material. Tissue culture technology facilitates the rapid multiplication of disease-free seeds, enhancing the efficiency of the seed production process. This initiative is expected to improve the timely availability of quality seeds to farmers, thereby boosting overall crop productivity. Additionally, the meeting reviewed the progress and challenges faced by CPRI's regional centres across India, discussing opportunities to strengthen the potato seed production network.
