External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's recent visit to Jamaica marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between India and Jamaica, characterized by both 'continuity and change.' In his article published in The Jamaican Gleaner, Jaishankar emphasized the historical ties stemming from the arrival of Indian indentured workers in the 19th century. He noted that the Indian community, now approximately 70,000 strong, serves as a vital link between the two nations. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of cultural influences, such as cuisine and festivals, that have enriched Jamaican life. The minister also pointed out that bilateral trade has crossed USD 100 million, with India's strengths in various sectors complementing Jamaica's ambitions as a logistics hub. Furthermore, he mentioned India's humanitarian assistance during disasters, including support after Hurricane Melissa.
