On April 26, 2023, Sarath Prasad, a 41-year-old remand prisoner at Alappuzha District Jail in Kerala, India, died by suicide. Prasad had been arrested just two days prior for allegedly attacking a doctor at Alappuzha General Hospital. According to police reports, he hanged himself from a ventilation opening in his cell using his clothes after climbing onto a pipe. When he was not seen during meal time, jail officials checked on him and found him unresponsive. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. Following this tragic incident, the Alappuzha south police have initiated an investigation, and jail authorities are also conducting an inquiry. The body will be released to his relatives after a post-mortem examination.
