On April 26, 2023, Sarath Prasad, a 41-year-old remand prisoner at Alappuzha District Jail in Kerala, India, died by suicide. Prasad had been arrested just two days prior for allegedly attacking a doctor at Alappuzha General Hospital. According to police reports, he hanged himself from a ventilation opening in his cell using his clothes after climbing onto a pipe. When he was not seen during meal time, jail officials checked on him and found him unresponsive. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
