On May 27, a wild bear attacked Georgi Bizhev, a 46-year-old tourist from Gorna Oryahovitsa, Bulgaria, after he threw food scraps from his car near the Vidraru Dam in Romania. The bear, likely protecting her cub, smashed the car window and attempted to drag Bizhev out, causing serious bite wounds to his left arm. Other drivers honked and shouted to scare the bear away, and Bizhev later reported that he had raised his arm to shield himself. He acknowledged that feeding bears is inappropriate and admitted his mistake in entering their environment. Following the attack, he returned to Bulgaria for further treatment. Authorities have reiterated the dangers of feeding bears, which can lead to heavy fines and pose risks to both humans and wildlife. Romania's brown bear population is significant, with estimates ranging from 6,000 to 13,000 bears in the Carpathian Mountains, where such encounters are becoming more common due to increased human activity.
