Jai Ram Thakur, the Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, has declared that the state is facing an 'economic emergency' and has called for the resignation of current Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Thakur argues that the government's inability to pay salaries to state employees and the deferral of wages indicate a severe economic decline. He criticized the administration for appointing six chief parliamentary secretaries with cabinet rank, which added to the state's financial burden, and noted that the monthly honorarium for chairpersons was increased from ₹30,000 to ₹1.5 lakh (approximately $360 to $1,800 USD). Thakur also expressed concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation, citing violent incidents, and accused the government of failing to fulfill its promises made during the 2022 assembly elections. He emphasized that the government's actions reflect a lack of intention to improve the state's economic condition, potentially leading to a larger crisis for future administrations.
