On Friday, the Supreme Court of India proposed that the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) establish a permanent vice-president position exclusively for women, effective from 2027. This recommendation came from a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice K V Viswanathan during discussions on reforms within Bar bodies. The court emphasized that this reform could lead to the SCBA's first woman president. Additionally, the court confirmed that the secretary's position will remain reserved for women in the upcoming 2026-27 elections, following requests from several women lawyers who argued for the importance of this role in the association's operations. The SCBA's structure includes three main offices: president, secretary, and treasurer, and reserving one of these for women would send a strong message to bar associations nationwide. The Supreme Court's recent initiatives have included 33% reservation for women in bar associations, extending to the Delhi High Court Bar Association and district bar associations. The court aims to implement these reforms collaboratively with the Bar community, ensuring that changes are not imposed abruptly.
