The Punjab government has granted permission to prosecute Madan Lal Jalalpur, a former Congress MLA from Ghanaur, in a corruption case involving the misappropriation of panchayati raj funds. The case, which has been under investigation since an FIR was registered on May 26, 2022, alleges that Jalalpur and others misused funds related to the acquisition of 1,104 acres of land in five villages of Patiala district, intended for the Amritsar-Kolkata corridor. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau's probe revealed that ₹205 crore was paid for the land, with an additional ₹97.8 crore paid to leaseholders, much of which was siphoned off. The investigation indicated that only 10% of the remaining funds were supposed to be used for development, yet ₹65 crore was reportedly spent on projects that existed only on paper. The prosecution sanction allows the trial to move forward after delays due to the lack of legal approval.
