The Gangajal Supply Scheme (Gangajal Apurti Yojna) is making strides in alleviating chronic water shortages in four districts of Bihar: Rajgir, Gaya, Bodh Gaya, and Nawada. Announced by the state water resources department during a review meeting in Patna, the scheme utilizes an extensive network of pipelines and pumping stations to transport Ganga water over long distances. Mission director Sumit Kumar highlighted this project as a significant engineering achievement developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Special secretary K D Prajwal noted that the initiative is a vital part of the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan, which aims to create a sustainable water management system while mitigating flooding risks. Consultant Ishwar Chandra Thakur pointed out that climate change has severely impacted reservoir capacities, prompting the need for enhanced pipe irrigation systems. The project also emphasizes environmental sustainability, with calls for departmental personnel to plant trees to aid in restoring natural water cycles. A documentary showcasing the project's technical execution and its socio-economic benefits was screened at the conclusion of the meeting.
