As US President Donald Trump prepares to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, China has reiterated the importance of the One China principle concerning Taiwan. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that adherence to this principle is crucial for a stable and sustainable relationship between the US and China. He emphasized that the US must honor commitments made by previous administrations regarding Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. The Taiwan question is considered a core interest for China, and military pressure around the island has escalated, with Chinese warplanes and naval vessels frequently operating in the area. This situation has created significant tension between the US and China, particularly as the US provides military support to Taiwan, complicating diplomatic relations further. Arthur Zhin-Sheng Wang, a defense expert, noted that such strong statements from Beijing ahead of the leaders' meeting are uncommon, highlighting the seriousness of the Taiwan issue in bilateral discussions.
