Sonke Gender Justice has called for urgent investment in community-level prevention strategies to combat the alarming rise of child sexual violence in South Africa. The organization highlights that children are increasingly becoming perpetrators, with 890 rape cases linked to minors reported in the 2025/26 financial year. Additionally, statutory rape cases surged to 199, reflecting a troubling trend. Sonke stresses the necessity of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in schools and communities, which provides children with the knowledge and skills to understand consent, recognize abuse, and navigate healthy relationships. The absence of CSE creates a dangerous void often filled by harmful cultural narratives and peer pressure. The organization advocates for community involvement in promoting positive masculinity and accountability through programs like One Man Can and MenEngage Africa, emphasizing that safe spaces for discussing relationships and consent are crucial for prevention. The rise in child sexual violence is linked to broader societal issues, including poverty, substance abuse, and exposure to violence, necessitating a collective effort to protect children and foster healthier environments.
