In the recent 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party, securing 108 seats, just 10 seats shy of the 118 needed for a majority. Congress leader Girish Chodankar has communicated the evolving political landscape to party leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. Political analysts suggest that TVK will require support from either the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led National Democratic Alliance to stake a claim to form the government. The governor is expected to invite TVK to form the government, allowing them 7 to 15 days to demonstrate their majority through a vote of confidence. If TVK fails to secure a majority, the governor may consider inviting the next largest party or even recommend President’s Rule under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution. TVK's campaign secretary, Nanjil P Sampath, expressed confidence in securing the necessary support, while also highlighting that TVK's 34.92% vote share marks a significant milestone in Indian political history.
