New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has unveiled the Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE), a new initiative aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of city operations for the benefit of working New Yorkers. In a post on X, Mamdani emphasized the need for a city government that is as prudent with public funds as its citizens are. COGE will be led by Patrick Gaspard, who has a background as the executive director of the Democratic National Committee and as an aide to former President Barack Obama. The Commission plans to hold public hearings in every borough, engaging union members, community organizers, and residents to gather insights on creating a more accountable government. The first public hearing is set for June 9, 2025. This initiative is reminiscent of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was established during the Trump administration but faced significant criticism for its approach to reducing federal workforce and government waste. DOGE was ultimately disbanded due to its unpopularity and allegations of overreach.
