Data from the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) indicates that the Borghat stretch of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway has been the most accident-prone area, with over half of all expressway accidents occurring there in recent years. In 2023, Borghat recorded 106 of the 154 accidents, leading to 39 deaths. The situation has continued to worsen, with 35 of 36 accidents in the first three months of 2026 occurring in this stretch. This section is particularly dangerous due to steep gradients and sharp curves, which pose risks when fast-moving cars interact with slow-moving heavy vehicles. The upcoming Missing Link project, scheduled to open on May 1, aims to alleviate these issues by providing an alternative route for light vehicles, thereby reducing congestion and improving traffic flow. Traffic experts believe that separating traffic streams will drastically decrease accident frequency and severity. Commuters have welcomed the project, expressing hope for safer travel conditions and reduced travel times.
