This decision was announced by Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, following recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium. The newly appointed judges include Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Senior advocate V. Mohana has extensive experience in constitutional and civil law matters. These appointments come as part of the Centre's initiative to increase the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength from 33 to 37 judges, an effort aimed at addressing the growing backlog of cases and enhancing the efficiency of the judicial system. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, promulgated the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, to facilitate this increase.
