The Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of the Philippines is currently reviewing a petition that proposes allowing drivers and operators of land-based public utility vehicles (PUVs) to collect a fuel surcharge on top of the existing base fare. LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II explained that this approach is inspired by similar practices in the maritime and air transport sectors, where base fares remain constant while fuel surcharges fluctuate. The proposal aims to encompass various land-based PUVs, including jeepneys and buses. Mendoza emphasized the need for clarity regarding the fuel component of the fare but did not disclose specific surcharge amounts. The LTFRB has yet to establish a timeline for its decision and plans to engage with transport groups that support the surcharge mechanism. Previously, the LTFRB had approved a fare increase due to rising fuel prices, which was subsequently suspended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who advocated for government subsidies instead. This situation has led to protests from transport groups demanding fare adjustments and a rollback of fuel prices.
