Bill Grayden, who passed away at 105, was a decorated World War II veteran and the longest-serving Member of Parliament in Western Australia, serving for 43 years. Born in 1920 in Perth, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force during World War II, where he faced significant challenges, including being reported dead during the Kokoda campaign. After the war, he entered politics, winning his first seat in 1947 and later becoming a member of Robert Menzies's government. Grayden was known for his commitment to Indigenous rights, chairing a committee in 1956 that investigated conditions for First Nations people, and his work contributed to the success of the 1967 Referendum. He was a family man, married to Betsy with whom he had 10 children, and was remembered as a humble and dedicated public servant.
