P. Shanmugam, the Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Tamil Nadu, has sharply criticized the central government's recent hikes in petrol, diesel, and commercial LPG prices, claiming they have plunged citizens into an 'unbearable crisis.' During statewide protests organized by the CPI(M), Shanmugam demanded an immediate rollback of the price increases, urging the government to shoulder the financial burden if oil companies are incurring losses. He highlighted the burden on ordinary citizens, stating that essential commodities like petrol and cooking gas must be made affordable and accessible. Shanmugam accused the BJP-led government of misleading voters prior to elections, asserting that ministers had falsely assured the public that fuel prices would not rise. He noted that commercial LPG cylinder prices have already surged by ₹1,000, with petrol and diesel prices increasing multiple times in just a few days. The protests reflect widespread dissatisfaction, with participants calling for the withdrawal of the price hikes, which have significantly raised transportation costs and the prices of essential goods. Shanmugam also addressed the issue of black marketing of LPG cylinders, exacerbated by supply restrictions.
