Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, who served on the Allahabad High Court, retired on Wednesday following a storm of controversy stemming from his remarks at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event in December 2024. During this event, he asserted that India should operate according to the wishes of the majority community, which led to significant backlash and an impeachment motion against him. Justice Yadav defended his statements, claiming they were misrepresented and that he had never discriminated based on caste or religion. He expressed appreciation for the support he received from the Bar Association during this tumultuous period. Appointed as an additional judge in December 2019 and made a permanent judge in March 2021, Yadav's tenure has been marked by his controversial stance on issues such as the Uniform Civil Code and practices like Triple Talaq. Despite promising to apologize for his comments, he later reaffirmed his position in a letter to the chief justice, stating that his remarks reflected societal concerns.
