Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation, the University of Jammu has announced several initiatives aimed at reducing fuel consumption and costs. Vice-Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai stated that the university will now conduct all PhD viva voce examinations online, making it the first institution in India to do so. This shift is expected to save travel time and fuel for both experts and scholars. Additionally, the university plans to prefer virtual speakers for national and international conferences to further minimize travel. In a bid to reduce unnecessary movement, the Academic Council meeting scheduled in Poonch has been moved to the university campus. Prof Rai emphasized the importance of these measures in light of the ongoing West Asian crisis, which has raised concerns over global oil supplies. He also encouraged university staff to consider using bicycles or carpooling to campus, stating, 'Every drop of fuel saved matters.'
