Gayle, who played from 2009 to 2021, participated in 142 matches and scored 4965 runs in 141 innings for teams including Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings. He won the Orange Cap twice and holds the records for the most sixes (357) and the highest individual score (175*) in the league's history. Vaughan's choice stands out as he overlooked other notable players like AB de Villiers, who scored 5162 runs in 184 matches, and Kieron Pollard, who contributed 3412 runs and 69 wickets during his tenure with the Mumbai Indians. Pollard played a key role in MI's five title victories and is now part of their support staff as batting coach.
