In a significant victory, Jahar Chakraborty of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura by securing 24,291 votes, defeating CPI(M)'s Amitabha Dutta, who received only 6,001 votes. This win, by a margin of over 18,000 votes, is notable as it follows the vacancy created by the death of former BJP MLA and Speaker Biswabandhu Sen on April 9. In the previous 2023 Assembly elections, Sen had won by a narrow margin of just 1,098 votes. The BJP's vote share has significantly increased from 49.35% in 2023 to 65.13% in this by-election, while the CPI(M) and Congress, which contested separately this time, secured 16.09% and 15.92% of the votes, respectively. Following this victory, the BJP now holds 33 seats in the 60-member Tripura Assembly, with its ally Tipra Motha having 13 MLAs and the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) holding one seat. The Opposition CPI(M) has 10 MLAs, and the Congress has three.
