On Thursday, Kanimozhi (DMK MP) criticized the Indian government for its inadequate approach to strategic petroleum reserves, stating that the country is vulnerable to global oil shocks due to reliance on 'short-term band-aid solutions.' She pointed out that despite raising concerns in Parliament nearly two years ago about India's limited Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) capacity, delays in expanding storage infrastructure have persisted. Kanimozhi emphasized that India currently has reserves sufficient for only 10 days and criticized the government's lack of long-term planning for energy security. Her remarks followed a government review of fuel supply amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured citizens of normal supply levels. The government noted that Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies are absorbing losses of nearly ₹550 crore per day to shield consumers from rising international fuel prices.
