Chandra Mohan Patowary, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the newly formed 16th Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati on Friday. The oath was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan, who expressed confidence in Patowary's capability to conduct the Assembly's initial proceedings with constitutional dignity. Patowary's primary responsibility will be to oversee the swearing-in of newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) during the session commencing on May 21, 2023. Following the oath-taking, the Assembly will elect a full-time Speaker. The NDA has nominated former minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass for this position.
In addition to the Assembly developments, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is actively reviewing industrial growth and power infrastructure in Assam, particularly in preparation for the upcoming summer electricity demand. Sarma reported that over 60% of investment commitments from the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative are in advanced stages, with some projects already operational. He also emphasized the government's commitment to preserving Assam's cultural heritage and outlined plans for a Budget Session scheduled for July 5-6.
