In July 2023, Bala Sashirekha, a young bride in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, was hospitalized with severe symptoms that led to a diagnosis of arsenic poisoning. Her mother-in-law, M Uma Maheshwari, had died weeks earlier, initially thought to be from natural causes. Sirisha, Sashirekha's sister-in-law living in the UK, suspected foul play and reported her ex-husband, Ajith Kumar Mupparappu, to the police. Investigations revealed a sinister plot by Ajith, a pharmacist, to poison Sirisha's family using arsenic-laced spices delivered to their home. Ajith had previously subjected Sirisha to abuse and threats, leading to their divorce. Despite multiple failed murder attempts, including hiring contract killers, Ajith remains elusive in the UK while nine accomplices have been arrested in India. Extradition proceedings are underway, with Ajith contesting his extradition on human rights grounds. Meanwhile, Sashirekha is recovering and expecting her second child, bringing a glimmer of hope to a family haunted by the trauma of poisoning.
