As college students enter summer break, gig apps like Uber and GoPuff are witnessing a surge in registrations from Gen Z workers. Data from Apptopia indicates that individuals aged 17 to 25 are the fastest-growing demographic on these platforms, with a 24% increase in signups this month alone. This trend is largely driven by the challenging job market for entry-level positions, where traditional roles are dwindling due to the rise of artificial intelligence. Many young workers are opting for gig jobs due to their flexibility and relatively higher pay compared to conventional summer jobs. Notably, GoPuff has reported a staggering 97.5% increase in young worker registrations year-over-year, while Lyft's driver app has seen a 70.3% growth in the same demographic. Although the summer spike in gig work is primarily seen in Gen Z, there are also smaller increases in registrations among older age groups, highlighting a broader trend towards gig employment.
