June marks National Deafblind Month in Canada, and the City of Greater Sudbury is actively promoting awareness through various initiatives. Michelle LaVoie from Sensity Deafblind and Sensory Support Network of Canada emphasized the importance of inclusion for individuals with Deafblindness. According to Karen Madho from Deafblind Ontario Services, over 2% of the population lives with both hearing and vision loss. In Sudbury, three supported living homes cater to eight residents experiencing Deafblindness. A key initiative this month is yarn bombing, where local organizations decorate the city to encourage conversations about Deafblindness and available services. Crystal Pigeon-Way from Deafblind Ontario Services noted that this year’s yarn bombing involves 16 to 17 local businesses and installations. Additionally, the Sudbury Peace Tower will be illuminated in blue to connect with other landmarks across Canada, including the CN Tower, to symbolize a collective effort in raising awareness about Deafblindness.
