Sridhar Vembu, the founder of Zoho, has expressed concerns regarding the heavy reliance of high school students on artificial intelligence (AI) tools for academic purposes. In response to a viral post discussing a study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Vembu highlighted that while AI can provide short-term benefits, it may ultimately undermine students' critical thinking skills. The study, conducted by researchers from the Wharton School, involved approximately 1,000 high school students in Turkey, divided into three groups to practice mathematics with varying levels of AI assistance. Results indicated that students using standard GPT-4 performed 48% better than those who did not use AI, while the tutor-style AI group solved 127% more problems. Despite these improvements, Vembu warns that this reliance on AI can lead to a lack of understanding of fundamental concepts, urging students to find a balance in their use of technology. He argues that AI should serve as a supplementary tool rather than a crutch that diminishes learning.
