President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an urgent response from government agencies following a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Maasim, Sarangani, on Monday morning. The quake, initially recorded at magnitude 7.0, occurred at 7:37 a.m. with its epicenter approximately 125 kilometers northeast of Sarangani. In response to the disaster, Marcos has suspended classes across all levels in affected areas of Mindanao until further notice. He emphasized the need for immediate action, directing the Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to coordinate disaster response and monitoring efforts. Additionally, the Department of Social Welfare and Development is preparing relief goods and ensuring that evacuation centers are operational. The Department of Public Works and Highways is on standby to assess damage to infrastructure and clear necessary routes for rescue operations. Marcos has urged residents to heed tsunami warnings and move to higher ground without delay, stressing the importance of safety over material possessions. He reassured the public that the national government is actively engaged in the response and is in constant communication with local authorities.
