The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections, declared on Monday, indicated that in 49 constituencies, the number of deleted electors surpassed the victory margins. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 26 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured 21 seats under these circumstances. A total of over 90 lakh names were removed during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which began last year. Notably, five constituencies had deletions exceeding the victory margins by over 10,000 votes. The Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions challenging the SIR process, which has seen 27.16 lakh deletions adjudicated by appointed judicial officers. As of now, over 34 lakh appeals regarding these deletions remain unresolved, with fewer than 2,000 appeals processed before the elections.
