A recent study conducted by the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy in Bengaluru, India, revealed that low-cost air quality sensors (LCSs) exhibit significant variations in pollutant readings, both among different manufacturers and even among devices from the same manufacturer. This inconsistency raises concerns about their reliability over time. The study evaluated 48 multi-pollutant sensors from six manufacturers, comparing their readings with a reference monitor over an eight-month period. It found that many sensors either malfunctioned or provided inaccurate data, primarily due to manufacturers calibrating them under different environmental conditions. When recalibrated for Bengaluru's specific conditions, the sensors performed markedly better. The study recommends that LCSs undergo calibration before deployment and suggests regular performance checks every three to six months to maintain accuracy, especially as environmental factors can change over time.
