In celebration of Pride Month, we recognize seven inspiring Indian LGBTQ+ figures who have significantly impacted the movement for equality and acceptance. Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, known as India’s first openly gay royal, has been a powerful advocate for LGBTQ+ rights since coming out in 2006. Dutee Chand, the first openly queer athlete in India, brought visibility to LGBTQ+ representation in sports when she publicly shared her same-sex relationship in 2019. Maneka Guruswamy, a senior advocate and the first openly LGBTQ+ parliamentarian, was instrumental in the landmark 2018 case that decriminalized homosexuality. Navtej Johar, an acclaimed dancer and activist, also played a crucial role in this legal victory. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a leading transgender activist, has worked tirelessly for transgender rights and was pivotal in the Supreme Court's recognition of transgender individuals as a legal third gender. Lilly Singh, a global entertainer, made headlines as the first openly queer South Asian woman to host a major late-night show. Lastly, Saleem Kidwai, a historian and advocate, has contributed to the discourse on queer identities through his influential writings. Together, these icons have transformed the landscape of LGBTQ+ rights in India.
