The inquest into the death of John Michael Henry Allen, a 79-year-old man from Adelaide, is examining the care he received for bed sores prior to his passing on September 9, 2022. Counsel assisting the coroner, Rebecca Schell, stated that Mr. Allen had been diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's dementia and had resided at the Bupa Enfield aged care facility since 2019. The inquiry will focus on whether the treatment of his bed sores from July to August 2022 was 'appropriate and reasonable.' Mr. Allen was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on August 21, 2022, after his daughter expressed concerns about his mobility and interactions. Upon admission, he was found to have significant pressure sores, leading to intensive treatment, including intravenous antibiotics and regular wound care. Despite these measures, Mr. Allen's health deteriorated, and he was transferred to palliative care on September 1, 2022. The inquest will also explore whether the aged care facility could have managed his condition differently to potentially prevent his death.
