The Punjab government is committing ₹600 crore to enhance flood prevention infrastructure at 132 vulnerable points across the state. Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal stated that the work is set to be completed by June 30. This initiative follows last year's severe floods, which caused significant damage, particularly at the dhussi embankment of the Ravi River near Shahpur border outpost in Amritsar, where a breach occurred. The government has since plugged 23 breaches and is reinforcing the embankment with stone pitching. Additionally, desilting of the river and cleaning of seasonal drains, including the Sakki Nallah in Gurdaspur, are underway to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season. To further bolster flood management efforts, the state is acquiring advanced amphibious machinery from Finland for improved infrastructure and maintenance of canals and drains.
