Mastodon, a decentralized social media platform, is recovering from a major Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack that took down its primary instance, mastodon.social. The attack began early Monday morning, rendering much of the Mastodon-operated server inaccessible. Andy Piper, Mastodon's head of communications, labeled the incident as significant but did not disclose the attackers' identity. A few hours after the attack, Mastodon reported that it had implemented countermeasures, allowing users to access the site again, although Piper warned that some ongoing instability might occur during recovery. This incident follows a similar DDoS attack on Bluesky, another decentralized platform, which also faced service disruptions recently. Bluesky confirmed that there was no evidence of unauthorized access to private user data but continued to experience issues later in the day, prompting an investigation.
