In a significant development in the inheritance dispute involving Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur, the Supreme Court of India has issued a two-month stay on the appointment of two independent directors to Raghuvanshi Investment Private Limited (RIPL). The court remarked that currently, 'no one is in control of anything' concerning the RK Trust and associated companies, as the matter is under mediation. Rani Kapur, the mother of the deceased businessman Sunjay Kapur, has raised concerns that Priya Kapur is attempting to seize control of company finances by pushing for the appointment of independent directors, which she alleges is a tactic to alter the company's control structure.
The Supreme Court urged all parties to engage in mediation with an open mind, noting that prolonged litigation benefits no one. The court also indicated that it would request the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to allow more time for compliance with its directives regarding the appointment of directors, in light of the ongoing mediation process. The case, which involves an inheritance estimated at Rs 30,000 crore (approximately $3.6 billion USD), has seen tensions rise following Sunjay Kapur's death in June of the previous year. The Supreme Court has appointed former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the mediator in this complex family dispute, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter amicably.
