A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday morning, prompting immediate tsunami warnings across the region, including Japan and Indonesia. The epicenter was located 13 km (8 miles) southwest of General Santos city, with a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the quake and warned of potential tsunami waves exceeding one meter (3 feet) that could persist for several hours. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated that waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) could affect certain Philippine coasts. In response, authorities advised residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground. Reports indicated that the earthquake caused structural damage, including cracks in a police building in Alabel town, although no immediate casualties were reported. Residents in Indonesia's North Sulawesi and North Maluku provinces also felt the tremors, and tsunami warnings were issued for Indonesia's northeastern coast as well.
