Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India have identified a new species of frog, named 'Amolops Kamal', in Nagaland. The species is dedicated to Dr. Kamal Choudhury, a former zoology professor. This discovery emphasizes the rich yet underexplored amphibian diversity in Northeast India.
- 01The new frog species, 'Amolops Kamal', was discovered in Singrep village, Kiphire district, Nagaland.
- 02The species is named in honor of Dr. Kamal Choudhury, who passed away on December 1, 2025.
- 03The research indicates that 'Amolops indoburmanensis' is not a single widespread species but consists of multiple distinct lineages.
- 04The study highlights the need for further genetic research and surveys to uncover more amphibian species in Northeast India.
- 05The genus Amolops includes around 90 recognized species globally, with 20 reported from India.

A team from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has discovered a new species of cascade-dwelling frog named 'Amolops Kamal' in Singrep village, Kiphire district, Nagaland. This species is dedicated to the late Dr. Kamal Choudhury, a former head of the Zoology department at B Barooah College in Guwahati, who inspired many students, including lead researcher Bhaskar Saikia. The findings were published in the 'Records of the Zoological Survey of India'. The study reveals that the specimens belong to a distinct evolutionary lineage within the Amolops indoburmanensis species complex, indicating that this complex comprises several cryptic species rather than a single widespread one. Currently, the genus Amolops includes about 90 recognized species worldwide, with 20 found in India. The research underscores the rich but largely unexplored amphibian diversity in Northeast India and calls for further genetic studies and surveys to identify more undiscovered species in the region's forests and mountain ecosystems.
