The New York Times announced that its popular word puzzle game, Wordle, will be transformed into a television game show, set to air on NBC next year. Hosted by NBC news anchor Savannah Guthrie, the show will feature teams competing for cash prizes. Co-produced by Electric Hot Dog, the production company of Jimmy Fallon, and Universal Television Alternative Studio, the adaptation aims to capitalize on Wordle's widespread appeal, which has captivated millions since its launch in 2021. The game's format allows players six attempts to guess a five-letter word, utilizing color-coded tiles to indicate correct letters. Caitlin Roper, executive editorial director of film and TV at The New York Times, expressed excitement about the creative potential of the game show format. The Times has a history of co-producing successful shows, including The Weekly and Modern Love. Wordle's adaptation follows a trend of similar word-based games appearing on television, such as Lingo, which first aired in the United States in 1987.
