JSW Steel, the flagship steel producer of the JSW Group, reported a 1% decline in crude steel production for April 2023, totaling 2.11 million tonnes compared to 2.14 million tonnes in April 2022. The Indian operations contributed 2.04 million tonnes, down from 2.056 million tonnes last year, while the US operations in Ohio produced 0.78 lakh tonnes, reflecting a 7% decrease. The drop in production was primarily due to the temporary shutdown of Blast Furnace-3 (BF3) at the Vijayanagar steel complex for capacity upgrades. Despite this, the company reported a strong capacity utilization rate of 94% when excluding BF3's capacity. JSW Steel has a consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and aims to expand this to 48.9 mtpa over the next four years. The company is investing over ₹2 trillion (approximately $24 billion USD) in various projects across India, including a 13.2 mtpa integrated steel plant in Paradip, Odisha, and an integrated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing complex in Cuttack district.
