As India experiences a heatwave with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts even more extreme conditions throughout the summer. In response, Ambiator, a startup based in Hyderabad, India, has developed an innovative refrigerant-free cooling system, the AMB650, which promises to deliver AC-level comfort at a fraction of the energy cost. This eco-friendly system operates by utilizing a technique known as Dew Point Regenerative Evaporative Cooling, which effectively removes heat from the air without relying on traditional air conditioning methods. The unit requires only 1 kilowatt of power, significantly less than conventional AC systems that consume 6.4 times more electricity for similar cooling output. Currently, 35 units are installed across various locations, including factories, offices, and homes in Hyderabad, Warangal, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Vellore, Pune, and Panchgani. Co-founder Tiger Aster emphasizes the urgent need to address cooling challenges in India, stating that it is a critical yet underfunded aspect of the climate crisis.
