In a significant archaeological find, 409 gold coins were discovered beneath the remains of a house in Torzhok, Tver region, Russia, where they had been buried for over a century. The coins, dating from 1848 to 1911, were uncovered during rescue excavations prior to a construction project. They were hidden in a clay pot known as a 'kandyushka' beneath the stone foundations of a wooden house that was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt. Experts believe the coins were buried during the 1917 Russian Revolution, a time when many sought to protect their wealth from theft or confiscation. The total face value of the coins is 4,070 rubles, which would be equivalent to over $530,000 today based on their gold content. Despite examining historical records of the 24 families who lived in the area during the relevant period, the owner’s identity remains a mystery. Researchers classify this find as a 'return hoard', indicating it was buried with the intention of being recovered, which unfortunately never happened. After conservation, the coins are set to be displayed at the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Torzhok.
